• A nation of 9-5-ers is giving way to a spirited movement of innovators, searching for ways to make a life filled with purpose and meaning, instead of simply earning a living. And they’re thriving in the place-based “honey bee economy” that restores, preserves and conserves the planet. In a workforce where job security, a pension and affordable healthcare are a thing of the past, social trends are moving toward greater self-reliance, relocalization and sustainability.

ECOpreneuring is a fresh and dynamic approach to entrepreneurial thinking, blending passion for the planet with small business pragmatics and smashing the stereotype that “doing good” and “running a business” can’t go hand in hand.

Part small business manifesto, part personal finance primer, ECOpreneuring is essential reading for small business owners, prospective entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs starting non-profit organizations and anyone who dreams of a livelihood based on independence, creativity, passion and a commitment to green practices and sustainability.

What if by reducing your personal impact on the Earth and by noticing how your decisions shape the very fabric of the universe, you were delivered to pure bliss, tranquility, peace and love? Sound far fetched? Listen in to hear how you can transform any area of your life to one that serves, enriches and empowers yourself and others.

Live a life of Green living based in personal discipline. Now the word discipline usually evokes the inner child that hesitates and thinks “Oh this is not going to be good”. But I invite you to listen in to see how adopting a stand of personal discipline leads to freedom, creativity and happiness.

Personal Organic Gardening

I am putting in my personal organic back/sided yard gardens today - weather cooperating. The excitement is hard to contain and will hopefully not be doused too badly by the effervescent personality of my two dogs, who like me, love veggies and fruits.

I will be assembling the awesome raised beds I purchased from Woody’s Woodworks - you can check them out at www.raised-garden-beds.com

Veggies going in include: cucumbers (great for detoxing), squash, tomatoes - 6 different varieties, zucchini, bell peppers, eggplant, radish, carrots, kale, turnip, collard, lettuce, spinach and strawberries.

I received my seeds and plants from a few sources - all organic of course -
Gurney’s - www.gurneys.com
Garden Harvests Supply - www.gardenharvestsupply.com
Park Seeds - www.parkseeds.com
Papa Geneo’s - www.papagenos.com

Soil came from a semi-local composter who services and supplies many Houston area organic farms and urban gardens. Call John Ferguson at Nature’s Way Resoures

The fun part was adding Lady Bugs, Praying Mantis eggs, and nematodes to my gardens which will help with pest reduction in a natural way.

Stay posted for more info from the garden…

NEW YORK - The current food crisis causing hunger and starvation for millions of people across the world is not going to end as long as those who dominate the international grain markets remain unwilling to change their behavior, according to experts specializing in international trade and environmental economics.” 0421 07

Business as usual is no longer a viable option,” said Lester Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute, a Washington, DC-based independent think tank. “Food security will deteriorate further unless leading countries can collectively mobilize to stabilize population and restrict the use of grain to produce automotive fuel.”

In his latest research, Brown, an award-winning environmental analyst, points out that the unsustainable use of land and water, as well as trade imbalances among nations, are among the major factors contributing to the present crisis of food shortages coupled with a phenomenal soaring of prices.

“The chronically tight food supply the world is now facing is driven by the cumulative effects of several well established trends that are affecting both global demand and supply, ” he told reporters at a recently held tele-press conference.

On the demand side, according to Brown, the trends include the addition of 70 million people every year, while some some 4 billion people are already struggling to move up the food chain and consume more grain-intensive livestock products. At the same time, the amount of grain used for car fuels is also rising immensely.

“Since 2005, this last source of demand has raised the annual growth in world grain consumption from nearly 20 million tons to about 50 million tons,” he said. “Meanwhile, on the supply side, there is little new land to be brought under the plow” unless it comes from clearing tropical rain forests in the Amazon and Congo basins, or in Indonesia or the Brazilian Cerrado.

The Institute’s research shows that new sources of irrigation water are even more scarce than new land to plow. During the past 50 years, world irrigated land has nearly tripled, expanding from 94 million hectares in 1950 to 276 million hectares in 2000. In other words, for the individual, the amount of cultivable land is shrinking by 1 percent every year.

Experts working with other international institutions, including the United Nations, more or less agree with Brown’s analysis of the current food crisis.

Early this week, a report released by the UN’s World Food Program (WFP) called for rich countries to contribute $500 million to address the issue of food scarcity that has led to riots in a number of countries in the global South.

The World Bank says at least 33 countries are currently in danger of political destabilization and internal conflicts driven by the rising prices of food. Currently, some of these poor countries are facing food price hikes up to 80 percent.

Like Brown, in a recent statement, Robert Watson, the former head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and chief economist at Britain’s Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, said the global production of food has increased, “but not every one has benefited.”

Watson blamed governments and private businesses for paying more attention to growth in production than natural resources or food security.

“Continuing with current trends means the Earth’s haves and have-nots splitting further apart,” he said. “It would leave us facing a world nobody wants to inhabit. We have to make food more available and nutritious without degrading the land.”

The 2,500-page WFP report says the world produces enough food for every one, yet over 800 million people go hungry. Its authors say food is cheaper and diets are better than 40 years ago, but malnutrition and food insecurity threatens millions nonetheless.

“The unequal distribution of food and conflict over control of the world’s dwindling natural resources presents a major political and social challenge to governments,” said the report’s authors. “[It is] likely to reach crisis status as climate change advances and world population expands from 6.7 billion to 9.2 billion by 2050.”

For his part, Brown is particularly concerned about the impact of U.S. policies on the growing food insecurity worldwide, and he is not convinced Washington has any plans to help mitigate the problem. “I don’t think the U.S. has realized the seriousness of the problem we are facing,” he told OneWorld.

“I am not sure they have any understanding of what is happening.”

Today on the show we will be discussing what it means to ‘Be Green’, ways you can empower your human experience to be more Eco-Conscious.
We will discuss how adopting a lifestyle that serves the planet and its resources helps to empower your mental, physical and spiritual well being.

This is about changing our priorities
Being courageous
Being open, willing and focused

What does it mean to be more green? And why would you want to dedicate time and energy toward such activities?

More and more you will hear of this intention on the news, and in your local communities.

Why? An inconvenient truth - even if the figures are not true, which in researching them myself, have found them to be frightfully true. I think restoring our environment to a state that has the less amount of human impact possible is not only polite but noble.

Take for instance you are invited over to a friend’s home and you spend the night, use their shower, bathroom, kitchen and living areas. Most of us have been raised to know we clean up after ourselves. Why would we act any different when it comes to our planet?

I think the answer to date has been that we have been thinking we are doing the best we can given our choices.

Well today we will discuss more choices you have and how you can learn what best suits your needs and lifestyle.

Well being exists not only with our bodies but more so it is a state of mind that empowers our every action, thought and desire. When we know we have done the right thing, we feel lighter. That is less stress feels like.

Sometimes it takes time to learn new ways of being, of undoing old habits, old thought patterns old belief systems that open us up to adopting the new.

At the end of the program I will provide the names of an organization that has a twelve month program to ease your life to one of green living.

So what is green living?

Some people talk about reducing their carbon footprint. Which means looking at areas of our lives where we create waste and pollution, which affects the Earth in negative ways. Some of the things we do or choose may not have a direct affect but contribute to the overall abuse of the planet indirectly - which has led to our environmental unconsciousness

If there will be a area of focus this generation and the next generations to come will embody - it is that of environmental concern and care.
The 60’s started it but are primarily noted as being anti-war.

Today’s push is towards undoing what we have contributed to as far as environmental harm - no blame needed here - we as humans have contributed to it whether or not we knew it by not concerning ourselves with what the end result of our actions are.

I know I am guilty of it. I recycle - yes - but what happens to the trash once it is picked up? I never really cared until I heard reports of certain waste companies combining the normal trash pickup with the recycled trash and only giving the impreSSION THAT THEY WERE DOING GOOD.

When we stay connected - we stay conscious - we are accountable and rest easier.

Some of my friends get anxious and angry in learning of such activities or even more appalling atrocities - but I suggest we come from a place that is not blaming but instead use our actions, thoughts, choices to shed light on a situation and allow new choices to be made. We are all learning. Spirits having a human experience.

So what can you do?

Go to smartenergyliving.org
to research ways to make your home more energy efficient.

air leakage, appliances, insulation,

Electricity - choose a company that supports green energy. Know that it is not 100% there is not yet a such thing as 100% green energy when it comes to electricity. But there are companies that commit to using all the green they can first. It is like hybrid electricity.

Across the country, utility companies and electricity suppliers are answering the consumer’s call for clean energy. Wind generated electricity production jumped 31% last year, making it the most rapidly growing branch of the power industry.
House cleaning & maintenance -
insulate
new ac units 13 seer - Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio

There is a new federal standard of 13 SEER for air conditioners manufactured as of January 2006. A 15 SEER unit qualifies for a $300 federal tax credit.

You can also look for the Energy Star rating on a unit which is 20% more efficient than standard models.

Air Ducts
A Fort Collins study of 38 new homes found that the ducts leaked, on average, 12 times more than what is considered acceptable for a good duct work system.

Gardening
find a gardener that does not use pesticides, or harmful chemicals.

Going green with yard care is no longer just a moral imperative—it is an aesthetic and intelligent way to ensure that your yard sustains a healthy, natural, and long-lasting relationship with surrounding ecosystems.
using a mulching lawnmower aka grass recycling
composting
mulchers
electric mowers or even push mowers - you get your exercise too.
rain catchers

Food choices
more raw the better - less stress on the ecosystem and on your body
takes less power to prepare, less overhead for
Clothing Choices
vintage clothes - new term for hand me downs but these have been refurbished and are top quality
shoes - I do not use unless they have not been worn - reason - energy of the person - you can absorb through the shoes easily.

Also known as one-of-a-kind clothing

Transportation choices

hybrid cars, those with high gas mileage,
walk, endorse sidewalks, bike, car pool
live close to where you work and shop

public transportation,

here today on 740 ktrh the question of the day is at what price do gas prices need to have you consider public transportation as a means of getting around?
My question to you is how can you arrange your life to lessen your carbon footprint regardless of the economical impact?
That is exactly what has gotten us into the mess we are in today with the environment - economics.
Let’s stop looking at our pocket books - which I know is a hard change to make - and start looking at our hearts. Truth is - when we live cleaner - we are cleaner all the way around - mind, body, spirit.

Local markets

Local farmers & manufacturers - why - less transportation costs, less overhead for the business owners, community sustainable

Cleaning out my house of items

What to do with the?
donation, resell, craigslist
send out emails to friends and family
performance theater in your area
schools

professional green organizer - help get things in order for you and set you up to be more green

cleaning products types - organic oil based cleansers that do not harm the environment

Birthdays
Paper makes up about 35 percent and plastics 11.3 percent of all municipal waste (before recycling); using less from the start is the easiest way to reduce trash.

activities that sustain the Earth and the community
Wrapping, boxes, gifts that are mindful of the environment

beach cleanup party - beach theme with a purpose - call your local county offices to learn of available clean up projects in your area
visit to a local fire station and bring gifts of donations to the homeless or less fortunate souls who have lost their homes to fire
visit an animal shelter where the kids can learn facts about how many animals are available for adoption - be prepared to go home with one or two pets - have guests bring leashes, bowls and other supplies that the shelter would need
old folks home visits bringing them home made goodies
clean up a park, plant trees, plant a garden at school or church
donate money to a community or alliance that helps replenish our planet

How to open coconuts

Since I tout the wide benefits of putting coconut in your diet for thyroid health,  immune system health and young looking skin it made since to post information on the mightly coconut.

Many have asked me how to easily open a young coconut - the larger white ones found in the refrigerated section of teh produce departments in health food stores and how to open mature coconuts - the ones we typically associate as ‘coconuts’.

Here are two great videos on coconuts:

Opening a mature coconut

Opening a young coconut - what is not revealed in this video is that you can scoop the inside of the coconut easily with a regular spoon and eat the white which at this stage of development is known as the ‘jelly’.

Yesterday we unveiled the We campaign, which will ultimately be the largest mobilization campaign ever on global warming. Please be sure to check out our new website, and great video clip:

I hope you will share this video with your friends and get them excited about the We Campaign.

You can also watch Al Gore talk about the campaign in this clip from the CBS show 60 Minutes: http://www.wecansolveit.org/cbs

The Washington Post ran a great article talking about the campaign’s launch. Here is an excerpt:

“In an effort to broaden the campaign’s appeal, the alliance has already forged working partnerships with groups including the Girl Scouts and the United Steelworkers of America. One of its early ads will feature the unlikely alliance of clergymen Pat Robertson and Al Sharpton sitting on a couch on Virginia Beach, talking about their commitment to address climate change.”

You can read the entire article and forward it to a friend here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/30/AR2008033001880.html

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that the agency is evaluating available data for a potential link between some serious issues involving mood changes and behavior affecting patients who take Singulair (montelukast) manufactured by Merck & Co, Inc.

singulair and risk of suicideAccording to some reports, Singulair prescribed in the treatment of asthma, allergic rhinitis and prevention of exercise-induced asthma, has been associated with unpleasant mood changes, suicidal thinking and behavior (suicidality), and suicide itself. Merck & Co, Inc has made several changes to the patient and prescriber information issued for Singulair and has worked with the FDA to determine how to communicate the latest changes in the most effective manner.

Recent information updates have included alerts for adverse reactions that now include tremor, depression, suicidality, and anxiousness. Plans to increase awareness of these potential side effects include personal interaction with prescribers and information leaflets for patients. Merck is conducting a re-evaluation study for Singulair and the FDA is reviewing patient reports of adverse reactions while taking Singulair. The FDA anticipates the review and evaluation process may take as long as nine months before firm data is available for public release.

This early communication about the safety review of Singulair does not mean that the FDA is asking healthcare professionals to discontinue prescribing the medication. Individuals currently taking Singulair are urged to continue to do so, but patients and physicians alike are also urged to be aware of the potential for these side effects and to take appropriate action if any should develop.

Singulair is a leukotriene receptor antagonist with mechanism of action similar to Accolate (zafirlukast). Another popular drug used for the treatment of similar symptoms is Zyflo/Zyflo CR (zafirlukast), which is a leukotriene synthesis inhibitor. The FDA is also reviewing reports of similar adverse reactions reported in patients taking these medications to determine if further investigation should be made.

Patients and physicians are requested to report any incidence of these adverse reactions while taking any of these drugs. The FDA has a program for reporting adverse reactions, the MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program, that can be accessed by:

going online to www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm,
by calling 1-800-332-1088, or
by faxing to 1-800-FDA-1078.

This announcement was issued in compliance with the FDA’s early communication program for sharing information with the public concerning the investigation of safety issues for drugs prescribed in the US.
